Saturday June 1, 2013 / 8:00pmOakland East Bay Symphony: A Celebration of the Music of Dave Brubeck
Balcony Rear (Rows U-Z)
How was your experience?
No fault of the presenters . . . the evening was a dud for us; in fact we left at intermission. Why? The concept was noble -- honoring a jazz legend and raising money for the Symphony. BUT ... Brubeck's intimate, personal signature was never meant to be delivered by a fullblown orchestra. It ended up as a kind of musical elephantiasis -- way too big a sound. And Ms. Von Stade's (fading and harsh) voice was totally unsuited to the jazz idiom. The plusses for me were the pre-show observations and reminiscences with Chris Brubeck and Michael Morgan.
