Tuesday September 24, 2013 / 7:05pmTampa Bay Rays vs. New York Yankees: Mariano Rivera Bobblehead Night
Main Level (Section 226)
How was your experience?
When we arrived some time after 5 pm, there was a crowd at least twice the size of the largest crowd I have ever seen at Yankee Stadium. I picked up the tickets at Will Call with no problems but then had to figure where the end of a line was in order to get in. The gates were not yet opened. Apparently, the Mariano Rivera Bobbleheads had not yet arrived (someone indicated that the delivery truck had broken down) and it appeared that the Yankee management decided to postpone opening the gates until they arrived. At one point, they realized that the Bobbleheads would not arrive before the start of the game and they decided to give out vouchers. However, it appeared that they waited until the last minute to print the vouchers. By the time they got the vouchers printed, distributed them to the gates, opened the gates, and we got inside, it was too late to get to Monument Park. Around the 3rd inning, they announced that you could redeem your voucher at a location near Gate 2 and the distribution would end 30 minutes after the game ended. When I went there at the top of the 4th inning, I was directed onto a ramp going up (away from the location they were giving out the Bobbleheads). The line continued to the top of the stadium, looped for some distance on the Grandstand level, and continued back down the ramp to near the location at which I started. By the time I received my bobblehead and got back to my seat, it was the bottom of the 9th inning. As a result, I missed most of the game. 1) They should have had the Bobbleheads delivered the day before (there was no game that day); 2) If they had the Bobbleheads delivered the day of the game, the delivery should have been scheduled for the morning; 3) They should have printed vouchers ahead of time so that they would be available when the gates were scheduled to open; 4) When the Bobbleheads did arrive, they should have arranged for at least a dozen locations for distribution of the Bobbleheads, with multiple locations on each level. While waiting on line, a Yankee employee told us that it was decided not to distribute the Bobbleheads when people were leaving the stadium because they did not want to pay their employees overtime. All in all, the Goldstar portion of the event was great, but the Yankee portion was a disaster. On top of all it all, the Yankees lost and now appear to have no chance to make the playoffs.
