How was your experience?
Shakespeare wrote many of the greatest works in theater. He wrote several less perfect works and some problem plays. And then there is Troilus. I never had seen this one live, just a BBC video and thought it unpleasant. It is worse...it is a truly execrable work. It is nasty, it is unconvincing, it uses old Iliad figures as props for a amoral real politic story of seduction, manipulation and abuse. There is much truly convoluted language that says things opaquely just for the sake of complexity. There is something very tawdry and ignoble about the whole in a way we do not think of SS. And, the humor is mean, vulgar, and falls flat much of the time. Can SS write a stinker, a play that never should be performed? Is that possible? That is kind of the reason I went to this Subterranean performance. These were not the best actors. There was no scenery. The enhancements often given to liven up lesser SS were missing...no music, gags, improv etc. So what you get is the play by the book presented decently. Should this play not be done? My verdict is in the stars.
