How was your experience?
This play was great fun! The Kabuki style of presentation worked beautifuly with the classic Shakespeare script. The performers managed to use the Kabuki speaking styles and stylized gestures to great effect while still doing a clear presentation of the dialogue so that the story was completely understandable. A simple Japanese style set was complimented by simple but effective theater techniques to create a wreck at sea. The Kabuki style of sound effects, koto music, and vibrant traditional costumes all worked to create a sense of the orient. The actors and even the "invisible" stage hand all seem to enjoy themselves inhabiting their traditional Kabuki characters. The narrator/jester role was a delight from start to finish, though all the performers did a great job. The production also found opportunities to blend multiple cultures, case in point, a hand fan competition between two of the comic characters was punctuated with famous the "Deliverance" banjo duel theme . . . played on koto. The four people in our group, experienced theater-goers, were all very pleased with the intimate venue, the production, and the performances. A great evening of theater.
