Wednesday December 17, 2008 / 7:30pmKirov Ballet: The Nutcracker
Founders Circle (1st Balcony)
How was your experience?
This being the Kirov, I was expecting a flawless performance. It was not. Aside from the principals, the dancers were not as polished (extensions, symmetry of the corps for example) as I expected. When we finally got to the second act, the Arabian dance was a total bore with 5 female dancers essentially just walking around and posing (and not in a particularly notable way) for the duration of the number. Particularly irritating (as others have mentioned) was the intermission in the middle of the first scene. I have seen countless performances of Nutcracker over the years and have never heard of a two-intermission version. It completely ruined the flow of the story. All that said, the costumes and scenery were lavish, the orchestra was outstanding, and the Goldstar seats and the price we paid were great.
