Very low budget drama that is not deserving of a Broadway stage. In spite of the impactful drama performance by Cynthia Nixon, it was more a university lecture on John Dunn and the progression of a dying cancer patient frustrated by lack of success of experimental research. Depressing, and boring except for a few "witty" lines interjected.

Quotes & Highlights

  • "[Nixon's] is a performance that is large and lucid and delicate at the same time, and it justifies Manhattan Theater Club’s decision to mount what is essentially a chamber piece on Broadway. As directed with a persuasive combination of showmanship and sensitivity by Lynne Meadow, this production magnifies the innate theatricality of Ms. Edson’s play without compromising the firm emotional truth at its center" --Ben Brantley, The New York Times

Description

Manhattan Theatre Club is pleased to announce full casting for the upcoming Broadway premiere of the Pulitzer Prize winning play Wit, by Margaret Edson, directed by Lynne Meadow.

Joining Tony and Emmy Award winner Cynthia Nixon as ‘Vivian Bearing’ will be Pun Bandhu (Technician), Olivier Award winner Suzanne Bertish (E.M. Ashford), Michael Countryman (Harvey Kelekian/Mr. Bearing), Jessica Dickey (Technician), Chiké Johnson (Technician), Greg Keller (Jason Posner), Carra Patterson (Susie Monahan), and Zachary Spicer (Technician).

Exquisitely written, affecting and often humorous, Wit follows a brilliant and exacting poetry professor (Tony and Emmy Award winner Cynthia Nixon) as she undergoes experimental treatment for cancer. A scholar who devoted her life to academia, she must now face the irony and injustice of becoming the subject of research.

Wit had its New York premiere in 1998, receiving universal acclaim, and ran Off-Broadway for over 500 performances. It was the most honored play of the season, garnering the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, and was named Best Play by the New York Drama Critic Circle, the Drama Desk Awards, the Outer Critics Circle Awards, the Drama League, and the Lucille Lortel Awards.

The creative team for Wit includes: Santo Loquasto (scenic design), Jennifer von Mayrhauser (costume design), Peter Kaczorowski (lighting design), and Jill BC Du Boff (sound design).

About the Ticket Supplier: Manhattan Theatre Club

Under the dynamic leadership of Artistic Director Lynne Meadow and Executive Producer Barry Grove, Manhattan Theatre Club has grown in three decades from a prolific Off-Off Broadway showcase into one of the country's most acclaimed theatre organizations.

Founded in 1970, MTC now includes a subscriber base of 20,000 and produces on Broadway in the recently restored Biltmore Theatre on West 47th Street and at the historic New York City Center complex on West 55th Street. Each season is distinguished by the variety of the repertoire. In 2008, MTC's Biltmore Theatre was re-named the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre after the pioneering Broadway publicist.

MTC is committed to bringing theatre to the widest possible audience. Initiatives which enable MTC's work to reach an ever-growing range of theatergoers include moving successful plays originally produced at MTC's New York City Center home to larger Broadway or Off-Broadway venues for an extended run; originating certain productions in larger venues; collaborating with leading regional theatres to bring major new American plays to New York; and bringing student and family audiences to our theatres through the ambitious Education program.
