The Morgan-Wixson is one of Santa Monica's oldest arts organizations but, true to its dramatic mission, it is constantly reinventing itself. The Morgan Theatre was built for the Santa Monica Theatre Guild in 1966. It was truly a labor of love, which move of the theatre constructed by theatre members. With the death of Mel Wixson in 1979, the SMTG lost one of its most loyal and hard-working members. In memory of Mel's selfless devotion, the membership voted to rename the theatre the Morgan-Wixson Theatre.

Many an emerging star has graced the Morgan-Wixson Theatre's stage. In 1947, a very young James Dean starred in a production of "The Romance of Scarlet Gulch." Harvey Korman played the title role in the SMTG's first "Hamlet" in 1955. The 1956 revival of "Green Grow the Lilacs" included four songs written for the production by a young songwriter named Rod McKuen. "Happy Days" star Marian Ross has played at the Morgan and Joyce DeWitt, of "Three's Company" fame, starred as Charity in our 1975 production of "Sweet Charity."
